Level 2 Data: Surface Soil Moisture


MetOp ASCAT Surface Soil Moisture

The ASCAT soil moisture product is produced by EUMETSAT, using the so-called WARP NRT software originally developed by
IPF/TU Wien (Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Vienna University of Technology) and prototyped for EUMETSAT. ASCAT soil moisture is delivered in orbit geometry as part of the ASCAT Level 2 product, in two different spatial resolutions:
50 km (25 km grid spacing) and approximately 25 km (12.5 km grid spacing).

ERS AMI WS Surface Soil Moisture

Enhanced resolution ERS-2 AMI WS Surface Soil Moisture product

The enhanced resolution ERS-2 AMI WS Surface Soil Moisture (SSM) product is based on the reprocessed high resolution Level 2 ERS-2 data (ASPS format). The product covers approximately 6 years ranging from 20th May 1997 to 17th February 2003 and
from 17th July 2003 to 11th April 2004. The product was retrieved with a near real time processor which is implemented at G-POD as land service available in NetCDF format comprising surface soil moisture estimations of one satellite orbit. Further information about the product and how to get the product are provided through the Service Support Environment (SSE) portal hosted by ESA.

Nominal resolution ERS-1/2 AMI WS Surface Soil Moisture product

Approximate coverage and
availability of the SSM data.

This product represents the ERS (ESCAT) Surface Soil Moisture (SSM). It is delivered in the same orbit geometry as the ERS-1/2 Wind Scatterometer Fast Delivery Product (ERS.WSC.UWI), on which it is based. We process new available UWI data every three days. Presently, UWI data is delivered from ERS-2, through a limited number of receiving stations (see image on the right), meaning that the SSM data coverage is not entirely global.
